Online Buzz: Elder-Friendly Communities Are Lacking
Look out, America! Here comes the "age wave." Are we doing enough to create a safe, healthy environment for our elders?
By 2030, Americans older than age 65 are expected to make up 20 percent of the nation's population. But is your community prepared for the unique challenges and needs of senior residents, the vast majority of whom prefer to "age in place"?
A recent survey by the Maturing of America Coalition reports that while many cities and towns have some accommodations, most are significantly lacking in helping their communities be aging-friendly. Some of the livability indicators that need to be in place to make a locality more accessible and safe for senior citizens include senior-friendly housing and community development; readily available senior transit options; safe sidewalks; and a robust healthcare system.
